Monarchs spend winter in the oyamel fir forest of southern Mexico where they roost in mass on trees at high elevation. Species of moth and butterfly travel long distances some to mass breed, others like the monarch seemingly to exploit nectar and larval sources. An annual project tagging butterflies helped researchers piece together three migration routes across North America.
